Low-income families who meet set eligibility criteria can apply for a Home Access Grant to buy a computer and/or internet package from a range of approved suppliers.

Grants are available on a first come, first served basis and all successful applicants will be given a Home Access Grant Card, which they can use to buy their package. All Home Access packages are designed to encourage and support learning at home.

Eligibility and the application process

Families are asked to call the Home Access Grant helpline on 0333 200 1004* where they will be taken through a simple eligibility check. If they are eligible, they will be sent an application form to be completed and returned in the Freepost envelope provided, along with supporting evidence detailed in the eligibility criteria.

Applicants will need to select the package they require on the application form. Depending on what they need, families can apply for a full package (computer and internet), device only or internet connection only package.

All packages come pre-loaded with Assistive Technology software designed to improve literacy and make it easier for learners to record and present ideas. However, recognising that some learners will need additional support, further Assistive Technology packages are also available for learners with more profound needs.

Looked After Children are also catered for through the programme, and their designated care worker can apply for a grant on their behalf. The eligibility criteria for Looked After Children is slightly different.

Detailed Looked After Children guidance notes and application form are only available for local authorities from the Downloads section.

Providing the application was completed correctly, the applicant will hear whether their application has been successful within three weeks.

Successful applications and receiving the grant

A Notice of Entitlement letter will be issued giving all details of the grant awarded. The Home Access Grant Card and PIN number will be posted separately.

Families can then buy their package from a range of approved suppliers either in store, online or over the phone using the Home Access Grant Card provided.
